Jenni's Jargon

the thoughts that run through my head

Music Monday…

on April 25, 2016

Music has always been a huge part of my life. I know so many people who use music as a therapy. I will say, most people would be able to tell my my mood just by my playlist. My musical taste ranges greatly from Classical, Bluegrass, Jazz, Rock, Pop and the list can just go on and on.

I grew up with a lot of music in my world. I remember listening to a lot of Motown with my mom on her record player. Michael Jackson was my first favorite artist. I would dance to his music all the time. In fact, MJ was my first concert when I was seven. Mom took me for my birthday, it was the Thriller tour and I am sure we were at the very top of Mile High Stadium, but I didn’t care where we sat!

Not only is other people’s music a huge part of who I am, but my own music shaped who I am in a big way. I started playing music in 4th grade. Alto Saxophone was my love at that time and I kept playing through 8th grade. I was then lured to the Brass side by my soon-to-be high school director. I started my brass journey on the trombone but after one year switched to the tuba and fell in love. My mom jokes that I picked tuba so she would have to carry it on parent’s day……it was not my motivation but a coincidental perk! (love you mom)

I am so happy that my love of music is shared with my husband and son. My hubby has always had a love of music as well and we share some similar tastes (some of my genres are not his cup of tea). Our son loves music too and loves to pick music we listen to when dancing around the house. He has also caught the bug for playing music. He stated on the Alto Saxophone as well and loves playing, even if rehearsal is at 7:00 a.m.

With so many of my favorite childhood artists passing away in the last few years, I have really gotten back into music from that era. Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Prince, David Bowie, B.B. King, Merle Haggard, Glenn Fry, and may more who are making sweet sounds in Heaven.

Here are a few of my favorite artists that you may not know about. Tia Fuller is a wonderful musician and I had the privilege of playing with in high school. We were in several ensembles together and now she is one of my favorite Jazz musicians of all time. Bettman & Halpin are wonderful songwriters and folk singers. I met them through my workplace where they are great volunteers. They write songs from their hearts and their harmony is just the best. Please take a moment to check these great artists our and tell me who some of your favorites are, especially up and coming artists, I love to hear new music!
