Jenni's Jargon

the thoughts that run through my head

Thank you for standing up…

on April 11, 2016

I want to take this time to say Thank You to the celebrities who are standing up and against the “NC Bathroom Law.”  I know there are people who read my blog who don’t share the same views as I do, It’s not a secret that I am very liberal. I don’t try to hide that fact in my life; however, I will not engage in discussions around the impending election and that is not what this post is about. This post is about equal rights.

I know celebrities don’t really need their horns tooted, the media does that enough for them but I wanted to take this time to throw in my two cents!  Recently two touring artists decided to cancel shows in both North Carolina and Mississippi due to the recent Anti-LGBT laws that were passed. The reason I want to bring attention to these artists and thank them is because it brings these subjects to the forefront and can often make people stop and pay attention.

We all live very busy lives and I know I am often not aware of things that are going on unless they show up in my social media feeds. I don’t regularly read the newspaper anymore (even on my phone) nor do I watch the news every day and here in CO that might not always make our evening news since it is in another state. I do, however, check to see what is trending at least once a day in social media and I think this is how many people these days get their news.

BruceWhen I saw that Bruce Springsteen was trending last week, I decided to check it out and see what was going on. I grew up in the 80’s and heard Bruce on the radio on the regular so I wanted to be sure all was well. When I read that Bruce had cancelled a concert in NC because he disagrees with the “Bathroom Law” I felt proud to be a Bruce fan. The statement on his website I lays out his reason in such an eloquent manner. I know it sucks for the fans that hold tickets to that show because they will not be able experience the greatness that is a Bruce concert, but I have to admire a man that would rather lose out on the revenue of that concert to stand up for the issues he believes in.

bryanToday I saw that Bryan Adams cancelled his Mississippi tour date because of the anti-LGBT law that was just passed as well. I really feel like these artists and any artist who stands up for the issues that the believe in are sending the right message. We, as a nation, can’t just sit back and let people’s rights be taken away just because they are different than we are. At the end of the day they are just great people trying to live their lives the best way they can and they don’t need to worry about taking care of a basic need in their life. We all have to worry about money, work, family, and friends, why should anyone have to worry about things like, where can I use the bathroom? It just seems ludicrous to me.

Thank you Bruce and Bryan for leading the charge and thinking about human rights before money and standing up for what you believe in!!
